30th October – Meeting at the Keswick town bridge.

Residents of the Keswick area are invited to join in with a photo opportunity at the town bridge and the Perspex flood defences adjacent to it. (Spread the word to your friends and networks.)

We are remembering the floods during Storm Desmond in 2015 when the river Greta flowed over these defences and affected the lives and homes of so many in Keswick.

If you want to join in, meet by the bridge at 11am on Saturday 30th October. We hope that as many as possible can wear something blue and/or bring some large pieces of blue material so that we can stand in front of the Perspex wall and represent the water that flowed over the top of it. We will be socially distanced, spread out along the wall, and have a short silence while we have a photo taken for the record.

Why are we doing this?

Like many others, we are joining in after receiving the invitation below from Deep Water Rising, which explains what people are doing on 30th October, and why:

Deep Water Rising (DWR) – a campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the impacts of climate change and the inaction of our leaders to address this emergency.

As I’m sure you are aware, our weather systems are being severely disrupted by changing climates. This has increased the frequency and severity of extreme weather events including destructive, life-threatening floods as seen recently in Germany, Italy, and of course the UK. This is resulting in flooding, pollution and devastating destruction.

The international climate conference (COP26) is taking place in Glasgow this November. We are organizing to collectively ‘call out to COP’ and demand our world leaders act now. We have to drastically reduce our carbon output now. No more greenwashing. No more false promises. COP26 is our last chance to urge global leaders to act in this decisive decade. Our children’s future depends on it.

We invite you to join us. Organize with other local groups as we all come together. We will meet on the bridges, flood zones, sea walls, canal bridges of our local communities and call out to COP on Saturday October 30th. A coordinated global call to COP.

Many other organizations, including Clang for COP (Church of England), Extinction Rebellion and Clang for Climate (Green Party) have already committed to joining this creative, family, inclusive and powerful action.
