Food, Agriculture and Forestry

Sustainable Keswick is here to help the people of Keswick to do their best for the environment in choosing the food we eat and how we look after our land; our farms, gardens, allotments, public outdoor spaces through the improvement of biodiversity, reduction of chemicals and planting of more trees. All of this is in aid of reducing the CO2 going into the atmosphere so causing climate change.

Here are some quick top tips you can do to start you off:

  • Eat locally produced food to reduce air miles.
  • Be a flexitarian! Eat less meat and dairy products to cut down your carbon footprint.
  • Vote with your money. What you buy will affect what is in the store, support local and British farmers and try to buy organic where you can to discourage the use of pesticides.
  • Try growing your own vegetables. If you don’t have a garden, explore growing herbs and salad leaves on a windowsill.
  • Use Peat-Free compost in your gardens to protect our carbon-capturing peatlands. Or make your own compost.
  • Plant bee friendly flowers, and try to keep areas of your garden wild!
  • Trees are also hugely important to our environment and capturing carbon, plant trees where you can and support local tree planting projects – kids can get involved too.
