Elizabeth’s Woodland: GBGW

There will be a gathering for the launch of a  ‘bioblitz’ at Keswick’s newest wood. The aim of the bioblitz will be to record as many species as possible during the week to establish a baseline of the trees and plants, insects and birds by using  the iNaturalist app on mobile telephones to identify and record all that can be found.  

Cllr Sally Lansbury, who with members of Fitz Park Trust and Steve Hebblethwaite of the Woodland  Trust, is behind this initiative says, ‘All ages can take part – all you need is a smartphone (or share a

friend’s phone) and yourselves. Young people, bring your parents with you if you don’t have a  smartphone yet! For those who haven’t yet discovered Elizabeth’s Woodland it is between the BMX  track and the Crosthwaite Road Car Park.’ 

She adds, ‘We welcome all the volunteers who have been a part of planting out this area to come  and take part along with as many local residents as possible. A wonderful transformation is taking  place here, changing a bit of unloved boggy land to a special space where wildlife can thrive and  where we can contemplate nature and the huge range of biodiversity within it. In the process the  trees will help with flood control and eventually will capture thousands of tons of CO2. We would like  to hear your suggestions for the future, to ensure the space is well-used and well-loved.
